Life Satisfaction Scale by Singh and Joseph: A Review

Life satisfaction is a core dimension of subjective well-being and a key measure of psychological health. It refers to an overall assessment of ones feelings, attitudes, and behaviors by ones own standards, ranging from positive to negative. Measuring life satisfaction can help individuals and professionals to understand the factors that contribute to or detract from ones happiness and well-being.

One of the instruments that can be used to measure life satisfaction is the Life Satisfaction Scale (L-S Scale) by Dr. Promila Singh and George Joseph. This scale was developed in 1971 and has been widely used in India and other countries. The L-S Scale consists of 10 items that assess different aspects of life satisfaction, such as health, family, work, leisure, social relations, self-esteem, and personal growth. The items are rated on a five-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied). The total score can range from 10 to 50, with higher scores indicating higher levels of life satisfaction.

The L-S Scale has been validated by several studies that have shown its reliability and validity. For example, Singh and Joseph (1971) reported that the L-S Scale had a high internal consistency (Cronbachs alpha = 0.88) and a good test-retest reliability (r = 0.82). They also found that the L-S Scale correlated positively with other measures of subjective well-being, such as happiness, morale, and self-actualization. Furthermore, they demonstrated that the L-S Scale was sensitive to changes in life situations, such as marriage, divorce, retirement, and illness.

Another study by Shefali (2018) examined the gender difference in life satisfaction and self-efficacy among young adults. She used the L-S Scale and the Self-Efficacy Scale by Sherer et al. (1982) to measure the two constructs. She found that there was no significant gender difference in life satisfaction and self-efficacy among young adults. She also found that there was a significant positive relationship between life satisfaction and self-efficacy, suggesting that higher levels of self-efficacy lead to higher levels of life satisfaction.

The L-S Scale is a simple and easy-to-use instrument that can provide valuable information about ones subjective well-being. It can be used for research, counseling, education, and personal development purposes. However, it is important to note that the L-S Scale is not a comprehensive measure of subjective well-being, as it does not include the affective component (i.e., positive and negative emotions). Therefore, it is recommended to use the L-S Scale in conjunction with other measures of subjective well-being that capture both the cognitive and the affective aspects.
