The research team used data gathered by Chinese authorities at the start of the pandemic to map the infections across 31 provinces, including the city of Wuhan. The data was based on government reports and information gathered by local governments from January 1, 2020. The maps show that the virus spread very quickly within China, with the first cluster of infections occurring in Wuhan and then spreading to other provinces. However, the researchers found that more cases appeared in rural than in urban areas. Of the 12,166 clusters of infections reported in the 31 provinces analysed, 82% were in rural areas. Clustering was found to occur in five provinces with over 100% of the cases.
